Aircraft and archaeology by Colin Lee

Camm Followers is very lucky to have Colin Lee amongst its members. For many years Colin has searched the countryside in search of crashed WW2 aircraft. Over the years he has excavated many sites, his expert knowledge on the Hawker Hurricane is invaluable, and on this site we hope to cover old and new ground where Hurricanes are excavated. This will apply also to any other of Camm's stable that are excavated, Typhoons, Tempests and Sea Furies, if and when the chance arises.

We would also like to point out that in the case of aviation archaeology, not only must permission be received from the land owner to excavate a crash site, a license must also be obtained from the Ministry of Defence, and failure to comply with the second requirement will lead to criminal prosecution.

The picture at the left depicts a Hurricane Mk.1, L2053, SD-M, of 501 (F) Squadron. It was shot down on the 12th May 1940, during the Battle of France by a Messerschmitt Bf110 of 1/ZG2. Its pilot Flying Officer Michael Smith, RAF lost his life when he baled out too low to the ground. The Hurricane crashed at Artaise le Vivier.

It was located by Colin Lee during 2002. On April 27th 2002 the full excavation of this site took place, with the permission of the French authorities. Many items of significance were recovered, including items that were later made available to the pilot's widow.
